Professor Schmitt is a renowned international law scholar who directed the Tallinn Manual project from 2009 through 2017. He is presently the Chair of International Law at the University of Reading, the Francis Lieber Distinguished Scholar at the United States Military Academy at West Point, a Distinguished Scholar at the University of Texas’ Strauss Center, and Professor Emeritus at the United States Naval War College.
Before assuming his present positions, he served as Professor and Dean of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies. He is a retired United States Air Force judge advocate.
Professor Schmitt was among the first to publish on the interplay of cyber operations and international law and he is widely considered as one of the world’s leading experts in the field. His work continues to set the benchmark for innovation scholarship regarding the application of international law in cyberspace.
